GEMSTAR BRANDS

Since 2017, the strategy undertaken by the two founders Alain Lim and Cédric Stirling of the entity GEMSTAR BRANDS, seems to bear fruit. Associate Director, in charge of marketing and sales strategy, Cédric Stirling explains the workings of this well-oiled machine.

Le Bijoutier International : Could you briefly introduce your background ?
Cédric Stirling :
I arrived in the jewellery industry by joining the Christian Bernard group where I stayed for 18 years. I held various positions including Deputy Managing Director. In 2017, Alain and I decided to join forces because we share the same values and have a common vision of the HBJO market and its evolution.

LBI : What is the history of GEMSTAR BRANDS ?
Cédric Stirling :
This company specialises in Product and Branding. We work mainly for jewellery retailers, our primary customers. We are committed to offering them high value-added collections combining design, quality and margin through our generic silver and gold-plated offerings but also with a portfolio of attractive and complementary brands. Our portfolio is composed of four brands : La Garçonne Diamant, Phebus, Ceranity, and now Griffe Rouge. Design and Brandinq are at the heart of our strategy. In addition, we manage the entire production chain, from manufacturing to delivery to our customers. This is important to us, as we know that service and quality are essential to be a winning partner for jewellers.

LBI : Within your group, everything is integrated is this precisely what makes your strength ?
Cédric Stirling :
Indeed, all our activities (R&D, design, manufacturing…) are integrated. Thus, more than 95% of our products are manufactured in our factories and meet the high manufacturing standards that we have set. This allows us to be reactive, pioneering and even daring in our designs. But our primary strength is our ability to analyse the market. We are no longer just in pure product development. Our mission is to imagine how the jewellery will evolve. We are in direct contact with sales and must analyse them, and be in permanent benchmark and competitive watch in France, but also internationally.

LBI : Can you tell us about the creation and manufacture of your jewellery ?
Cédric Stirling :
In 2017, when GEMSTAR BRANDS was created, the jewellery sector was in crisis. So we had to come up with attractive propositions for jewellers. So we took over La Garçonne, Vanessa Tugendhaft’s concept and re-branded it as La Garçonne Diamant. A diamond jewellery brand with an average price of 100 euros. I think it is now essential to offer our jewellery partners, in their target market, not only brands built with a real stylistic territory, and real selling points, but also with the right branding, communication, design and pricing.

LBI : What is the positioning of each of your brands ?
Cédric Stirling :
Our men’s brand Phebus is one of the most established brands in the HBJO landscape. It is currently benefiting from a re-branding operation that will be carried out over time, in order to meet customers’ expectations as closely as possible. We want to position PHEBUS as a lifestyle brand that focuses on youth. Our number one objective is to get more young people to visit our jewellery partners. To achieve this, we are playing the social network card to the full with awareness campaigns with a qualified audience on TicTok and Snapchat for example. Our generic collection represents a significant part of our turnover. It is built on trend analysis and is based on three pillars: design, quality and price. Another brand, another environment, Ceranity is an offer targeted at jewellers with modern and refined lines of ceramic jewellery set with diamonds or zirconium oxides in steel or rhodium-plated silver. Finally, La Garçonne Diamant is our star brand of silver and goldplated diamond jewellery.

LBI : Tell us about your latest collections and/or product innovations ?
Cédric Stirling :
We are launching our new collection : Griffe Rouge in October, during the Fashion Paris trade show and the Shopping Days. We are still using the « jewellers’ partner » approach with very qualitative jewellery, with jewelled and worked finishes and very beautiful volumes. Griffe Rouge jewels combine know-how, colour and excessiveness at an affordable price between 120 and 150€. We wish to allow our customers to offer in their shop window a majestic show, worthy of the windows of the Place Vendôme.

LBI : Which of your brands stands out from the crowd ?
Cédric Stirling :
All our brands are worked on with the same energy and commitment. This is possible because our collection portfolio is mastered, as we have adapted it to our resources.

LBI : How many references do you offer each year ?
Cédric Stirling :
We have high volumes, between 300 and 350 items are sold every six months to meet the renewal needs of each of our collections.

LBI : Where do you make your products ?
Cédric Stirling :
GEMSTAR BRANDS products in rhodium-plated silver and 316L steel are manufactured in China in the Canton region and meet the quality, finishing and volume requirements that we impose at production costs that allow us to be a partner that contributes to the margin of our jewellers. The gold plating of our jewellery is done in France in order to offer the best finish and quality to our customers.

LBI : The after-sales service, you made it your hobbyhorse, isn’t it finally the recipe for success beyond the product itself ?
Cédric Stirling :
The after-sales service is very important to the point that we provide it free of charge and without administrative constraints that can sometimes be heavy for the jewellers’ teams. Besides that, we follow the whole manufacturing chain, from the creation of the model to the shipment of the product, with a total traceabilitý. We have acquired know-how, of course, but it is also our duty to control our processes in order to make our exchanges with our partners more fluid. We obviously want to help them save money but also time through the services and innovations that we are putting in place and that we wish to improve continuously.

LBI : What are your plans for the companý in the coming years ?
Cédric Stirling :
Further strengthen our partnership with jewellers. They are our first customer and we want to deploy our business model with them. To do this, we are working on new services and developing our existing partnerships. We would like to be perceived by jewellers as one of the major partner suppliers to the profession.
